Middle School Drama – Enrichment

The middle school drama class is an enrichment class for 7th and 8th graders, and meets twice a week. Drama is a class which is guaranteed to bring about spasms of laughter in every class period. This enrichment focuses on three major areas of drama: improvisation, pantomime, and short skits or plays.

The majority of drama class is spent doing improvisational games. The purpose of this is to help the students think quickly and creatively at the same time. The students are usually given a random scene, a character, or a dialogue that they must make up on the spot. Another part of the drama class involves small skits or plays which we prepare for the Christmas and spring concerts. In the fall these skits usually center on Christmas, and in the spring the topics vary from “Aesop’s Fables” to skits about sheep.

During the spring semester, we focus on pantomime. Last year we took the song “The Champion” by Carmen. The class did an amazing job at bringing the song to life and even had the opportunity to perform in one of the churches here in Moscow.

High School Drama – The Hinkson Players

The Hinkson Players is comprised of high school students, grades 9-12, who have flair for the dramatic. Past productions have included such classics as The Importance of Being Earnest by Wilde, and Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, as well as inspirational productions like The Long Road Home and The Praetorium.

In addition to developing their acting talents, students also have the opportunity to contribute to the creation of sets, props, & costumes. They are also encouraged to assist with make-up, lighting, and sound effects.

Without a doubt, "the play" is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the spring semester. Scripts are selected at the beginning of each school year, and auditions are held during the first quarter. Rehearsals commence just before the semester break, with the target of performing sometime in mid-March.
