Compensation and Benefits
Hinkson Christian Academy does not provide a comprehensive salary. All HCA staff are considered missionaries. As missionaries they are required to raise their own support. While our teachers are not salaried, HCA does offer a stipend of $10,000 per year for full time teachers. This helps to reduce the required level of support considerably. We do require all teachers to come through a sending mission agency.
Do all teachers/staff come through a sending mission?
Staff are considered missionaries and as such they must come through a sending agency or church. Sending agencies help screen and prepare teachers and staff for inter-cultural/international field conditions. They also provide administrative support for donor and contribution management. HCA can assist you in finding a sending agency should you need it. RCE, Resourcing Christian Education, International www.rce-international.org is an organization many of our staff use. (top)
Does HCA provide any salary, stipend, insurance coverage or housing?
We do have a $10,000 per year subsidy for most positions. The use of this is determined by the sending agency. We prefer that all teachers have a fully donor supported salary but realize that is not always possible. Donors not only provide obvious financial support, they are often the best source of prayer support.
We require that all incoming personnel have a basic level of medical insurance coverage. If necessary, we can help identify possible solutions.
We are not able to provide housing but we do help in locating housing if the sending agency does not do so. (top)
What screening does HCA do beyond the application and written references?
If we determine a personal interview is needed to clarify or address a concern, we’ll arrange a face-to-face interview, a telephone interview or suggest a field visit if appropriate.
We realize that sending missions are better suited and more experienced in screening missionaries for field assignments and therefore we place great value on their findings and recommendations. As an ACSI accredited school we are required to do a criminal background check on all new staff. v Unless there are unusual prohibiting circumstances, we require incoming staff to attend the ACSI sponsored Pre-Field Orientation / Third-Culture Kids (PFO-TCK) seminar offered each summer. For how long do most teachers come?
We would prefer long-term commitments for the stability and continuity of the school. However, we also realize that for many this is a "testing of the waters" and therefore have many teachers come for a one to two year term initially. In the majority of cases, our teachers either extend their term or come back later.
One big advantage of the longer term is having the time and opportunity to get better acquainted with the language and culture of Russia. (top)
Is HCA only looking for staff and faculty with teaching certificates?
For a teaching position, a teaching certificate is preferred, especially in the elementary grades. We do consider experience and educational background in evaluating teaching qualifications. At a minimum, a prospective teacher should have a degree in the subject area for which they apply.
HCA also has many non-teaching positions that are critical to the operation of the school, which do not require teacher training. (top)
What is the average age of the staff?
It's hard to make a general statement because personnel changes occur regularly. However, we have a good variety - from teachers recently out of college to retirees that love adventure. We have married couples with families already grown and couples with young children. We also have a significant number of singles who are looking at career options. (top)
Does HCA consider special personal situations, i.e. being a single parent or being divorced?
These things are decided on a case-by-case basis. This could also entail additional references and input to determine if this is the best place for that individual. (top)
Is there opportunity to travel?
Many of our staff take the opportunity provided by holidays and school breaks to visit other parts of Russia and nearby countries. If you stay for more than one year you will need to renew your visa. This involves leaving the country. Many use this as an opportunity to visit parts of Europe and the Middle East. (top)
What kind of medical care is available?
There are several western style medical centers that provide good preventive and emergency care. Most prescription and non-prescription medicines are available to purchase in local pharmacies (top)
